Seems there are some problem un Ubuntu (more on 64bit) platform.
Unfortunately i don't use it, nor i've had useful reports by the affected people, anyway i tried to guess.
Also, default mplayer in ubuntu doesn't play well with pulseaudio, nor supports vaapi, so i strongly suggest you to update mplayer.
